Dr. Gutierrez is from Santa Clarita, CA and completed his undergraduate studies at Occidental College in Los Angeles, where he studied kinesiology and played varsity football. He completed his medical degree at the Keck School of Medicine of the University of Southern California and General Surgery residency at the Los Angeles County Medical Center/University of Southern California program. After his time in Los Angeles, he relocated to Miami, FL where he is currently in the final months of a two-year fellowship in trauma surgery and surgical critical care at the Ryder Trauma Center/University of Miami program.

After having trained at two of the highest volume trauma centers in the nation, Dr. Gutierrez is excited to continue delivering high quality evidence-based care in trauma, acute care surgery, and surgical critical care in the East Bay. He has special clinical interests in the management of penetrating trauma, acute care surgery in the pregnant patient, and strategies for approaching the difficult cholecystectomy including intra-operative use of cholangiography and indocyanine green fluorescence imaging.

Dr. Gutierrez’s research interests include ultra-massive transfusion in trauma and outcomes after subtotal cholecystectomy. Additionally, he has a passion for surgical education and serves as an instructor for the Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS) and Advanced Surgical Skills for Exposures in Trauma (ASSET) courses. After having served as administrative chief in both residency and fellowship, he looks forward to the opportunity to take on a leadership position in surgical education at UCSF East Bay. He is a member of the Eastern Association for the Surgery of Trauma (EAST), Associate Member of the American Association for the Surgery of Trauma (AAST) and was awarded the AAST’s 2023 Annual Meeting Scholarship.
